How to Join

The basic criteria for joining a Lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England is to be a man aged over 21 years, and to hold a belief in a Supreme Being.

One of the commonest misconceptions about Freemasonry is that you have to be invited to join. In fact, the exact opposite is true - you have to ask to join. The problem is - who to ask? Often, members keep their membership private. However, there are avenues open to prospective members.

Firstly, you can contact us via this web site. If the Forest of Arden Lodge isn't convenient to you, let us know anyway, and we'll pass your details on to the relevant Lodge or Province.

If you do approach us, you can expect to be invited to a variety of social events. The purpose of this is so you can have a good look at us, and be sure that you and your family are happy that you will be joining the right Lodge. It also serves for us to ensure that you will fit into the Lodge - we ask our members for a fair commitment, and we don't want to waste your time or ours.

We may also arrange for a couple of Past Masters to visit you at your home. The purpose of this visit is to allow you, and more importantly your family, to ask questions, and be sure of the financial and time commitment that will be placed upon you. You will need a proposer & seconder, and we will ask you to provide references.

All this seems rather onerous, but it serves to ensure that the unique character of each Lodge is maintained, and that applicants who join remain life long members of a very special fraternity. And once you're in, we know you will have no regrets!
